appears that the higher reaches of the palace actually are consumed with more
heat than the lower layers. Each caryatid pillar that holds up the curved
roof of this corridor appears as a gradient of color and heat; the higher
the material making up the pillar, the brighter red it glows. The corridor
leads off to the west, as well as the east, for some distance.

flare up in unison along the entire length of the corridor. Almost as if the
palace were alive and breating, each brazier pulsates in turn before returning
to a more subdued light. High above upon the ceiling, spiralling shafts of
rock spin towards the ground, growing ever thinner and sharper as they come
within half the distance from roof to floor. The tips of the spikes glow
a deep red in color, perhaps indicating that there is more to them than
is currently visible. A stairway leads up farther into the palace from here,
while the remainder of the passage is to the west.
