On a Grand Staircase
The staircase leading to the upper reaches of the palace is crafted in
much the same way as the rest of the palace. Blocks of the charcoal colored
stone wind their way upwards, slowly melding into a flowing stairway that
rises to a hole in the burning ceiling. Thin spines hold up a rough
handrail that travels along with the stairway; many of the spines glow red
hot as if they had been superheated.

Nearing a Staircase
A dark staircase winds upwards to the west, where it disappears through
the flame-engulfed roof of this chamber. This particular region of the palace
is particularly odd, as remnants of a battle that waged here not long ago are
still visible. Splatters of charred blood mar the surfaces of several pillars
and the walls. A broken silver arrow, the tip of a mithril sword and some other
miscellaneous debris of warfare can be seen. What might have happened or when
remains a mystery, however.

Hallway in the Palace of Charcoal
The already intense heat is taken up another notch here as the charcoal
substance that makes up the palace begins to glow a brighter red in color. It
appears that the higher reaches of the palace actually are consumed with more
heat than the lower layers. Each caryatid pillar that holds up the curved
roof of this corridor appears as a gradient of color and heat; the higher
the material making up the pillar, the brighter red it glows. The hallway
leads off to the west, as well as the east.
An evil aura fills the area.

Open Area in the Palace of Charcoal
Here the charcoal glows a little more brighter than before. The roof is
engulfed in flames that billow along the underside of the ceiling. Pillars
of half-molten charcoal hold up the roof in a macabre scene of licentious
immolation. As the palace slowly melts, burns and chars, it is rebuilt
again in a never-ending cycle of rebirth. There is no sound as the fire
burns and the only pervasive sense is the incredible heat bearing down
upon everything.
An evil aura fills the area.
