surround the valley.  The forest continues to the south and west and a
small trail rises into the mountains to the east.

and the marks left behind on the tree look like claw marks, though what
creature could possible have claws of such size is impossible to
imagine.  The forest continues in every direction.

dead trees are small it would still take incredible strength to do such
damage.  Moist, but sandy, soil still clings to some of the tree roots,
whatever destroyed this portion of the forest might still be nearby.

In a Light Forest
   Who or what was fighting here is hard to determine, but at least one
of the creatures was large and powerful enough to scratch right through
stone.  The face of the mountain to the south bears claw marks, if
anything in the world is actually large enough to have such claws, and
it appears that lightning bolts have been tossed around here.  A layer
of blood covers everything in the area and several corpses lie on the
ground.  The forest continues to the north and east.

In a Light Forest
   The tension in the forest is easier to explain now.  This has
clearly been the scene of a great battle.  A huge warhorse lies dead on
the ground, freshly killed by the claw marks of a beast of unimaginable
proportions.  Trees have been tossed aside as if they were toothpicks
and blood covers everything.  Burn marks from lightning bolts have
scarred the mountainside to the west.  Crushed trees continue to the
south where it looks like the battle continued and less destroyed
forest continues to the north and east.

In a Light Forest
   The small valley tapers to a point to the west where it meets a
small trail and continues to the south and east.  Tension hangs in the
air so heavily that not even the birds or small animals can be seen
playing anywhere, all have hidden for some reason.  Heavy brush lines
the mountainside to the north preventing any travel in that direction.
Elegant young pines and stately aspens grow throughout the light forest
as it continues to the south and west.

In a Light Forest
   Unseen tension destroys the otherwise perfect peace and calm.
Birds, and even the squirrels and other animals appear to be hiding for
some reason.  The source of this tension is hard to determine,
everything appears to be peaceful here.  Several pale blue flowers
droop from an odd-looking bush that clings to the mountain to the south
and the aspens and pines shake slightly in the gentle breeze.  The
forest continues to the east, and heads west where a trail travels
through an opening in the mountains.

Above a Narrow Winding Trail
   Two mountains to the north and south look as if they were separated
by the stroke of an axe which has created a small opening here that
leads down into a narrow winding trail that makes its way down the
mountains.  The trail below is steep and drops down quickly into
another small mountain valley and further to the west a trail can be
seen leaving the same valley to head down out of the mountains.  The
aspen and pine trees that surround this area continue to the east and a
narrow trail leads down from here.

A Narrow Mountain Trail
   Small saplings cling precariously to the mountainside here,
providing handy hand and foot holds for those climbing down the steep
trail here.  This trail is rarely used and it is easy to determine why.
The sandy soil doesn't provide much traction, making the climb somewhat
arduous.  The trail heads upward to a gap between two mountains and
downward toward a stand of aspens.

   The trail isn't very steep here, but to the east it makes a steep
climb upward.  Weak aspen saplings struggle to grow in the sandy soil
here with little success.  As the trail heads west it slowly sinks into
a narrow valley wedged between two small mountains.  The valley is
filled with small aspens that shake with every light breeze.

is a peace and calm here that is pleasant to behold.  The deer that

clearly don't see enough hunters to have learned properly how to fear
passing adventurers.  The forest continues to the south and west.

Short and stout, this dwarf has a long red beard and flowing red mane
that make him stand out against any backdrop.  He doesn't care though,
he is at peace with his god and is quite able to take care of himself.
Scars on his exposed arms show that he has spent a great deal of time
working as a blacksmith, perhaps due to his religion.  Many dwarves
worship gods of metals and forges and show their faith in their
creations a the forge.  The smile on his face tells all around him that
he would be happy to talk about his god.
The dwarven holy man appears to be Dwarf and is in excellent condition.
He's medium in size.
He is glowing with holiness!

   Wedged between two mountains this narrow trail drops down into a
small valley to the east and heads through a tight opening to the west.
There is nothing here but barren stone, wind and water have washed any
dirt or soil into the lush wooded valley below.  The trail is so narrow
here that no animals seem likely to bother going through this way.

On a Narrow Trail
   Barren stones and jagged rocks line this tight trail.  This appears
to be the best way through the mountains.  To the north and south the
mountains are so steep that they are impassable, this trail appears to
be one of the few passages through the mountains to the small valleys
and plateaus within them.  The narrow trail leads downward to the west
to end up in a small, dark forest and heads east where it appears to
enter a small valley.

On a Steep Trail
   This is more of a narrow rocky ribbon stretched along the side of
the hills here than a real trail.  Boulders and jagged stones make
walking difficult, and the path is so steep that it would be easy to
fall.  The narrow trail continues both up and down the steep
mountainside.

On a Steep Trail
   A few more feet down and the trail come up against some tall bushes
that lead off into a dark and twisted-looking forest.  This part of the
mountain is still so barren and devoid of life that not even any
animals can be seen.  The trail continues its steep decent toward a
thick thorny hedge and heads upward into the mountains.

Before a Dark and Thorny Hedge
   A thick hedge of twisted, thorny bushes lies to the west, making an
uncomfortable entrance into an already twisted and dark forest.  A
strange darkness seems to emanate from the thorny hedge, making it seem
far more imposing than it truely is.  Trees in the forest beyond the
hedge appear twisted and deformed, and there is something dark and
sinister about the way their branches intertwine.  Perhaps the steep
climb into the mountains would be a safer route.

Deep in a Twisted Wood
   A sloping pathway to the east appears to lead out of the forest toward
some low foothills and mountains.  Impossible to see from beneath the
interwoven branches of the dense forest to the west, the mountains appear
quite suddenly, surprising travelers lucky enough to make it through the
forest.  The path is vague, undoubtedly rarely used, if at all, and appears
to be the safest way out of the dark and twisted forest that extends to the
west.  A small circle of stones rests beside a large boulder to the north,
showing that this area was once used as a campsite, though clearly not for a
very long time.

Unlike most faeries that go off on flights of fancy, this sturdy faerie
clearly has a purpose.  He circles slowly, clearly guarding something, though
what he is guarding is completely unclear.  His dark purple wings hum softly
as the beat up and down, one would think he would tire, but he continues his
slow circling showing no fatigue.
The guardian faerie appears to be Faerie and is in excellent condition.
He's tiny in size.
He seems to be moving much faster than normal..
His body appears to be covered with swirling shadows!
He is surrounded by burning flames!
He's encased in a shimmering globe!

A Light Forest
   Thin, but thorny, trees line the area here.  It is almost as if every
tree, no matter what type it may be, has some sort of thorny protection.
Despite the fact that the trees aren't as dense as those further to the east,
they have a sinister, twisted quality to them that is hard to explain.
Though sunlight is able to make its way through the thick branches above,
there are long, dark shadows that could easily conceal fairly large beasts.
Even the animals here are twisted copies of more recognizable beasts.  The
name 'Twisted Wood' given to this area by the bards and adventurers is much
easier to understand when one sees the beginning of the forest.

A Field of Sharp Grass
   Standing nearly a meter in height, the grass here reaches high enough to
cause serious discomfort to even the largest of travelers.  Razor sharp
ridges run along the thin edges of the leaves, and barbed points stick into
clothing and tear off.  Small bushes also dot the land, but they are stunted,
twisted things full of sharp thorns and tightly bunched branches.  There is
little here to attract even the heartiest of adventurers, though the forest
that lies further to the south and east has been rumored to contain vast
treasures and beautiful castles.  Few travelers have returned from the
'Twisted Wood' so the rumors are had to confirm or even deny.

The Edge of Field of Sharp Grass
   Massive hedges of thorny brush rise up here to form a rough border for
this untamed field of sharp grass.  Bearing edges sharp enough to be used as
weapons, the grass has barbed points that stick into clothing and even armor
forcing travelers to fight their way through the fields.  Strange, twisted
animals dart through the grass and thorny bushes, they seem to have evolved a
resistance to the sharp edges, and even an ability to feed on them.  A vast
forest can be seen to the south and east, though the trees aren't tall there
is something dark and sinister about them that can be felt even at this
distance.  Bards' have recounted tales of castles and mansions hidden in the
'Twisted Wood' in dimly lit bars, but it is difficult to find one that has
truely been there.

A Stand of Thorny Trees

bite to the cool breezes that tear across the sharp grasses.  Tales have been
told of mansions, even castles, hidden in the deep forest to the east, some
of the rumors have conviced bold adventurers to enter the tortured darkness,
few have returned.

A Light Forest
   Though the forest isn't thick here, it has a sinister quality to it that
does a very good job of keeping away travelers.  A fairly well-kept road has
been cut through the edge of the forest to the west so that travelers have no
need of stopping, or even traveling through this somewhat sinister place.  It
is hard to imagine what creatures make their homes here.  The bushes and
trees are twisted and bent, full of sharp thorns that make even the heartiest
of travelers wary.  Odd claw marks mark the ground near a rabbit's burrow to
the west, they somehow add to the strange, sinister feel of the forest.  A
road passes by to the west and the forest continues to the south and east
where it begins to thicken.  To the north the brush and trees get much
thinner, though no less threatening.

A Light Forest
   Though the forest isn't thick here, it has a sinister quality to it that

Even the animals in the forest here have a strange, twisted quality to them,
a sinister and evil aspect that seems to come from the forest itself.  The

to get thicker and more threatening, as well as to the north where it begins
to thin a bit.  The road that runs by along the south and west can only be
reached to the west, the southern route has been blocked by a huge, twisted
bloodthorn.

A Mountain Trail
   As it travels through the boulders the path reaches a small area that has
been covered by another large rock that has fallen over those surrounding the
path.  Cramped quarters make it difficult to turn around here but there
appears to be a more wide-open area along the edge of the mountain to the
east and the path heads down past a jagged stone below.

A Trade Path Heading into a Ravine
   This narrow trade path heads down into a ravine that makes a sharp drop
down into the hills to the north.  The steep descent shows that what appear to
be unassuming hills here must become some fairly imposing mountains further to
the north.  A number of small juniper bushes and a few small trees dot this
area as the path heads south toward a small forest clearing.  Dank, humid air
seems to struggle its way out of the ravine to the north, where the narrow path
makes its steep descent, but otherwise this area is quite peaceful and calm.

On a Stone Stairway
   Two people can travel abreast on this narrow stairway.  The stones are well
worn by the passage of many feet and are very sturdy, but there are no
guardrails to prevent someone from falling over the edge.  At this height one
can see down into the lower branches of some of the trees to the east.  Tree
branches throughout the jungle below and to the east are alive with birds and
monkeys as well as other creatures that are not as easy to identify.  The
stairway continues up toward the Woodseer plateau and down to the jungle.
