Beginning of Aravne Forest
     Here is where the jungle ends and the giant forest begins.  Here
the trees at the edge of the forest are simply very large.  Farther in,
however, they grow to inconceivable heights allowable only by their innate
magic.  The center of the forest is where the wonderous city of Aravne
can be found among the largest of the giant trees.  It is rumored that in
the center of that great city stands the World tree, which is said to
touch the sky and the realm of the gods themselves.  The path leads onward
toward the city to the north, and back into the jungle to the south.

Path Along the Forest Floor
     Here the forest path continues northward toward the tree city of
Aravne.  The path is fairly well traveled, although it is not until much
farther to the north that the safety of the city patrol boundary can be
reached.  For this reason, caravans laden with valuable goods from faraway
lands often push onward after leaving the jungle until they reach safety
to the north.  Rumors of bandits and theives have become minor legends
throughout the area, and are taken very seriously by those who travel here.

Path Approaching a Small Clearing
     The forest path approaches a small clearing to the north.  Although
the forest floor here has seen nothing but shadows for countless millenia,
rays of light penetrate nearly to the forest floor up ahead.  It is not
apparent from here what may have caused the clearing up ahead, but after days
of travel through the dark jungle it looks like a tempting place to
rest.

A Clearing in the Forest
     Here the forest path opens into a large clearing.  Athough here
the shadows which normally cloak the forest floor abate slightly,  the
choking amount of leaves and needles which cover the ground still prevent any
grass from gaining a foothold here.  Hundreds of feet up, a small patch of sky
can be seen between the giant treetops.  It looks as though many caravans
have stopped here to rest, and also like there has been an attempt to cover up
some signs of some sort of activity.  To the north, the path continues to wind
between the trunks of the huge trees.

A Pathway Further into Aravne Forest
   Here the pathway continues deeper into Aravne Forest to the north.  South
along the pathway seems to lie a small, inviting clearing.  The bases of the
trees are growing larger and larger as the path leads ever deeper into
the ancient forest.  Many of them here are already wider than what ten
ogres could form a ring around, and must be tens of centuries old.

A Junction of the Main Path
   Here the main path seems to come to a small junction of sorts.  While the
main path continues north and south through the forest, a small side path
leads off to the east.  The side path looks as though it was once hidden, but
has now been recently enlarged.  How or why this has happened is unknown.

Main Path Along the Forest Floor
   The trees here are beginning to grow larger,  with many of the bases
larger around than a house.  It is hard to see farther than a stones throw in
any direction now due to the thickening forest.  The path begins to take
more and more of a winding course as it leads thicker into Aravne forest,
twisting throughout the gigantic trees.

Split in the Path at a Giant Rock
   Here the path takes a sudden split, as a huge boulder lies imbedded
into the forest floor to the north.  Judging by the mass of the stone at its
base, a good half of it probably lies below the ground.  The origional path
is blocked by the boulder, and a pair of new paths have been forged to either
side of it.  The path leading out of the forest lead back to the south.

Detour in the Main Path
  Here the main path to Aravne has taken a slight detour around a huge
boulder to the west.  To the north, it continues its winding treck toward
the tree city, disappearing into the mammoth wood.  Many of the ancient
trees here are covered in moss, and their first branches are nearly out of
sight they are so high up.

Main Path Approaching Aravne
  Here the main path begins to approach the largest of the giant trees,
which hold the tree city of Aravne itself.  Even from a distance,
the magnificence of these leviathans is breathtaking.  Still the very same
trees which began this forest, they are now unimaginably old and incredibly
large.  The first of these primordial giants is directly north along the trail,
and blocks most of the rest of the forest ahead behind its massive width.

Before the Entry Tree of Aravne
  Here the path comes to an end before one of the primordial trees upon
which the tree city of Aravne begins.  The base of this old tree is
so wide, that it would take several minutes to walk around to the side of it

Side Path Leading to the Unloading Zone
  This side path leads around the trunk of the massive tree towards a
small clearing full of carts, wagons, and beasts of burden.  The sounds of
many voices can be heard, as well as the occasional fatigue insired argument.
The smell of animal and humanoid sweat grows stronger as the path heads east
toward the unloading zone clearing.  Above, the staircase which begins to the
west spirals its way steadily up the trunk of the tree toward the lowest level
of the city.

On a Wooden Staircase
   Here the staircase is even with the eastern side of the aravne tree, and
has climbed fifty feet from the forest floor.  The size of the trunk is so
great that by the time it climbs another fifty feet to the lowest branches it
will barely have curved to the north face.  Far below, the caravan unloading
zone can be seen east of the tree.

Entrance to the Commons District
   Here, against the north side of the entrance tree, lies the entrance to the
commons district.  The lowest level of the tree city of Aravne, it
the least fortunate of the residents reside.  The bulk of industrial work, and
other functions neccessary to the maintenance of the city but not pleasing to
behold by city nobles are done at this level.  Wooden structures
spiderweb into the lower branches in every direction to the north, looking
both spectacular in inginuity and confusing in actuality at the same time.  A
spiral staircase winds down along the trunk of the tree to the forest
floor, while a broad platform extends out from the top of the steps.  Skyways,
the wooden walkways which connect the structures here, lead off to both the
north and east.

A Wooden Skyway in the Commons District
   Spanning the distance between the structures on the lower branches, this
walkway is thankfully accompanied by smooth wooden railings.  A dizzying
view of the forest floor can occasionally be glimpsed through gaps in the
branches, although at this height it is hard to see much detail.  Even though
this skyway is at the lower altitudes of the city, it would still be a very
precarious way to travel for ground dwellers were it not so sturdy and well
designed.

The Commons District Free Market
   This is a section of the sprawling mass of platforms and walkways known
as the commons district free market.  Usually the first place that
new goods are sold in aravne due to its proximity to the loading platform,
this marketplace is bustling with business.  The lack of local tarrifs or
taxes on trade here has resulted in a wonderous marketplace filled with free
enterprise.  Instead of large and well established shops, the bulk of the
market is made up of fast dealing salesman who both buy and sell wares to make
their living.  A crafty and shrewd business mind could thrive in this place,
and it appears a few such have been able to establish permanent businesses
here and there.

strong wooden planks roped together to form a bridge.  Swinging slightly, it
still is heavy enough that it renders the bridge immune to any slight breezes

dizzying, as even at the lowest level of Aravne, the forest floor
is still hundreds of feet below.

A Home in the Commons District
   Built of strong, thick wood, this home rests at the lowest branching of
the tree.  A heavy trapdoor in the floor leads out of the home and down to
the connecting skyways below.  It is not very decorated, and has few
furnishings other than a simple bunk, some cupboards, and a table.  Not the
dwelling of a wealthy individual by any means, it is nonetheless a noteworthy
accomplishment to own ones own home on a home tree, even down here
in the commons district.

Skyway Connecting the Home Trees and Grand Walk
   This skyway, unlike their swinging rope supported cousins connecting the
home trees to the south, is wide and sturdy.  Thick wooden planks are
supported by steel aerial cables and giant aravne wood beams.  To the north it
connects with the largest walkway in the Commons District, the Grand Way.

   This is the western end of the Grand Way.  Here travelers entering the
Commons Distict must choose the northern skyway toward the Free Tavern and
the rest of the marketplace, or the southern skyway toward the Home Trees.
To the east, the Grand Way continues toward the Great Stairway.

On the Grand Way
   This is the large platform street which marks the entrance into the
Commons District from the Great Stairway which lies to the east. The
Grand Way is filled with tourists and visitors to the Commons District,
as well as street hustlers who eagerly greet them.

Guard Post on the Grand Way
   This is the eastern end of the Grand Way, where it meets the foot of
the Great Stairway.  Here the roadlike platform passes beneath a guard
post, which serves to regulate access between the Commons District, and
the Main Sprawl of Aravne.

Foot of the Great Stairway
   Here the Great Stairway begins its long spiral up to the middle
branches of the Aravne Forest, where the bulk of the city is built.
To the west is the commons district, from where smells both good and bad
waft through the skyways.  A guard post can be seen directly west, regulating
the traffic to and from the main sprawl.

   Made of long Aravne planks, this stairway follows the curve of one of
the giant trees as it makes its way toward the main sprawl of Aravne above.
One of the oldest standing structures is the entire city, the stairway was at
one time rumored to be wide enough for fifty ogres to walk it standing
side by side.  Now, however, it is not even possible to tell how it was once
attached to the side of the tree, as the tree has slowly overgrown the entire
inner side of the stair.

up the main sprawl of Aravne.  Although it narrows considerably
above, a small portion of the stairway does continue further up the tree.

   This narrow stairway continues up the giant tree with no end in sight.
Due to the tighter and tighter curve of the tree, it is impossible to see
what lies beyond.

   This upper landing marks the top end of the Great Stairway.  To
the north begin the plethora of platforms, skyways, and structures that make
up the main sprawl of Aravne.  Although it narrows considerably
above, a small portion of the stairway does continue further up the tree.

Main Sprawl Customs Gate
   This guard post sets the tone for all those passing through into the main
sprawl of Aravne.  Several large Human and Forest Elf guards watch
carefully over the crowd passing by, while several lawbreakers are visibly
detained at the back of the post.  To the north begins Trunk Way, the main
walk through the main sprawl.

The Grand Skyway
   The widest skyway in all of aravne, this is the main route through the
center of Aravne.  Due to its size and the weight it must support, it takes
a rather windy route northward through the wide central branches of the great
Aravne trees.  Just to the north it takes an eastward detour around one
of the gigantic tree trunks before following one of the wide branches that
stretches out northwards.

The Grand Skyway
   Here the Grand Skyway takes a slight eastward detour as it curves
around the trunk of a giant Aravne tree.  The wooden floor actually has a
slight hump to it here, as it passes over one of the massive branches leading
away from the trunk in an eastward direction.  Once over the hump the skyway
again leads off to the north, following the course of another of the huge
branches which support this amazing structure.

The Grand Skyway
   Here the skyway follows a northerly branch as it makes its way deeper
into the city.  Just ahead lies the southern intersection of Merchants
Way, which branches off into an amazingly dense section of Aravne trees.
Beyond that, not much can be made out due to the thickness of branches which
wind their way in every possible direction and are every possible thickness.

Intersection of Merchants Way and The Grand Skyway
   Here the main skyway of Aravne comes to its first southern intersection.
A relatively smaller branch (only the thickness of a small house) crosses over
the top of the giant branch which supports The Grand Skyway, and heads
off into the thick tangle of trees and branches to the west.  While the main
skyway rises over the branch and continues northward, a smaller skyway curves
to the west here, and becomes Merchants Way.

The Grand Skyway
   As the branch supporting this massive skyway begins to curve downward
here, either on its own initiative or as a result of the weight of the giant
skyway and a few hundred years, the skyway does not follow it.  Instead, a
mass of wooden structural beams have been built one on top of the other, on
top of which the skyway continues to the north at a more level pace, where
just ahead it intersects another massive branch which heads northwest.

Intersection of The Grand Skyway and Home Avenue
   Here the pier-like structure supporting the skyway meets up with another
of the massive main Aravne branches, and turns to the northwest to follow
the natural support provided by it.  An east leading side branch provides the
support for a smaller skyway, known as Home Avenue, which leads off into
the dense chaos of branches that makes up this altitude of the Aravne Forest.

The Grand Skyway
   Here the skyway leads deeper into the city as it follows a giant branch
which has slowly cut a swath through the tangle of 'smaller' branches.  Just
out of sight to the northwest the branch appears to end abruptly as it reaches

   The giant branch which proves the support for the middle section of the
large skyway has suffered a devastating crack here some few centuries ago.
While back to the southeast the branch appears vigorous, and actually supports
The Grand Skyway, here its days of supporting skyways are over.   The crack and
sagging of the giant branch has given way to many medium sized branches, over
which The Grand Skyway continues in a northerly direction.  Merchants Way
also intersects here, and leads off to the Merchants District west of here.

gentle buzz of commerce.  A few slender rays of sunlight lance down through
a gap in the foliage to the north, counterbalancing the undeniable sense
of something being just a tiny bit wrong in this place.

Dragonfall Pit on The Grand Skyway
   Always thought to be a tavern rumor until witnessed in the flesh, this
place is truly on of the greatest sights to behold in the region.  A gaping
swath through the massive branches of Aravne was cut in a blaze of heat
and momentum, created by an ancient red dragon as it fell to its
death in the wizards war centuries ago.  It was here that its momentum through
the branches began to slow, and eventually stop a few hundred feet below.
This created both a gap in the Aravne foliage above, and a two hundred
foot hole below, known as Dragonfall Pit.  Although the trees have
made some headway in closing the rift, Sunlight still manages to lance its
way down through the remaining gaps.  A witness to the incredible event saw
direct sunlight for the first time in his life on that day, and looked
eye to eye with Solos, god of sunlight.  Instantly filled with faith and
belief, he founded the Temple of the Sun, which placed its front doors here
just to the west.

which has slowly cut a swath through the tangle of 'smaller' branches.  Just
out of sight to the northwest the branch appears to end abruptly as it reaches

   Here the pier-like structure supporting the skyway meets up with another
of the massive main Aravne branches, and turns to the northwest to follow
the natural support provided by it.  An east leading side branch provides the
support for a smaller skyway, known as Home Avenue, which leads off into
the dense chaos of branches that makes up this altitude of the Aravne Forest.

Home Avenue
   This skyway is perhaps the most confusing path on Aravne, as it winds
its way through makeshift houses nestled here within the tangle of giant
branches.  Sometimes the walkway has turns within turns, rising and falling as
it weaves its way over, under, around, and through the tangle of foliage.  Its
construction was not planned like many of the other skyways, but instead just
evolved as more and more residents moved into the area.  The only possible way
to determine direction and location on this path is through total memorization.

An Aravne Home
   This treehouse residence looks very cozy and safe.  Nestled here within
the branches, it is made completely of strong Aravne wood.  A fireplace sits
in the center of the living area surrounded by leafstone.  The beds are
hammocks suspended from rungs in the ceiling, and look extremely comfortable.
Entrance and exit to the treehouse can be made through various holes cut in the
walls, instead of a single doorway as most landside homes are likely to have.
Light is reflected into the dwelling from panels of large shiny leaves which
are suspended near the windows, reflecting ambient light into the living area.
Glass baubles filled with glowing bugs also hang from the ceiling, providing
an eerie light during the night hours.
