Paladins were granted an unusual holy spell to combat certain
opponents. Dharma scatters the paladin's soul into limbo so it may
brush up against the positive plane of existence. The paladin's soul
requires protection otherwise dharma will falter and fade.
When the paladin is in a melee and their opponent has somehow surpassed
their regular lifeforce, the energies of the positive plane will transfer
some of lifeforce to the paladin, which causes the paladin to experience
exuberant righteousness.
Devotion is a vital aspect as it increases dharma's duration and
effectiveness. Dharma provides some protection and healing abilities
only if the paladin is receiving a transfer of lifeforce and their
devotion exceeds certain thresholds.

The Crusader Paladin conducts a holy war against evil in all of its form.
His main focus is on dealing damage to those foul creatures, possessing the
added ability to "Skewer" their enemies more effectively than their
unspecialized bretheren. Due to their hatred of evil, they are especially
effective at purging it from the world.
Crusaders also gain an improved version of Skewer at level 36.
